The Better Ideas / New Technology In Logging portion of our program continues to be the most popular panel presentation. You will hear from 4 panel speaker discussing different topic of interest ranging from “eagle claw grapples” to “GPS systems in harvesters”. The following topics will be presented:

Mike Schmidt, Forestry Biomass Project Manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry, will present “Why Bundles?” The presentation will tentatively focus on how advanced harvesting equipment (1490D Energy Bundler, 1270D Harvester, etc) are tools for economically reducing excessive forest fuels while benefiting both the environment and local economies. Information from our June ’07, 3 week demonstration near John Day, Oregon, will be included in the presentation.

Mike Schmidt has been the “Forestry Biomass Project Manager” for John Deere Construction & Forestry since 2006. As Forestry Biomass Project Manager Mike is responsible for managing John Deere’s forest biomass initiative which includes identifying opportunities where John Deere forestry products may provide solutions to the biomass industry. Prior to working with John Deere, Mike managed hardwood sawmills in the Midwestern US and was a senior timber procurement forester in the Midwestern, Southern and Western US. He is a graduate of Oklahoma State University and currently makes his home in Chetek, Wisconsin.

Nate Burton, Forestry Marketing Manager, Komatsu Forest, Green Bay Wisconsin
Nate Burton is the General Manager of Marketing of Komatsu Forest LLC, the North American distributors of Valmet forestry equipment and Komatsu forestry excavators. He joined the company in 2003.

Komatsu Forest was created when the Valmet and Timbco forestry machine lines were purchased by Komatsu Ltd of Japan in January, 2004. Komatsu Forest factories are in Shawano, Wisconsin and Umea, Sweden, serving global forestry markets.

Komatsu Forest offices in Wisconsin are responsible for distribution through the company’s North American dealer organization.

Nate’s equipment industry experience began in the mid-70’s with Sales Promotion at Allis-Chalmers Ag Equipment Division. Over the years he also managed dealer development at a Massey-Ferguson subsidiary, and managed Sales & Marketing at a United States precision machine tool company.

Nate’s marketing degree is from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater, with post graduate education at the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh.

He enjoys spending time with his wife Mary, and his children and grandchildren at their home near Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Dan Boak, Boak Logging, California, “Eagle Claw Grapple”
Joint presentation by Dan Boak and Sam Baker on “Grapple logging made easier”, radio controlled grapple carriage, manufactured by Eagle Carriage & Machine. This unit will operate on two drum yarders and operations are made easier with the use of a camera mounted on the grapple and monitor in cab of the yarder.

Sam Baker, Eagle Carriage & Machine, Inc, LaGrande, Oregon, “Eagle Claw Grapple”
Sam Baker was raised on a cattle ranch in Eastern Oregon. He graduated in 1975 from Union High School and attended Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Oregon. In 1977, his father Scotty and two other partners opened Eagle Truck & Machine, Inc. Sam went to work for Eagle Truck & Machine in March of 1977 and has worked side by side with his father since then.
In 1979 Scotty designed and built the 1st Eagle Sky Car. Sam has been instrumental in all aspects of the manufacture of the Eagle Carriage lines as well as the operation of the machine job shop. In 1998 Scott separated from his original partners and formed a new corporation with Sam and Nate Jacob as partners that is now know as Eagle Carriage & Machine, Inc.

Sam has been involved with the design and manufacture of Eagle Carriages for almost 30 years. The machine shop manufactures Waste Oil Recovery Tanks and Custom Front Bumpers as well, being a full service machine shop for the public. Eagle has introduced nine models of carriages and two Eagle Claw designs since the first carriage in 1977.

John Rubiales, Emissions Solutions Specialist, Peterson Tractor Co., Leandro , California. John will provide brief overview of the new California off-road diesel emissions regulations, a look at some of the costs involved, and a discussion of what Caterpillar is doing in terms of machine re-powers.

John holds a degree in Public Relations and Speech Communications from the University of Nevada, Reno. While going to school, he worked in the rock, sand, and gravel industry, joining RMC Pacific Material as a plant manager after graduation.

During his 14 years with the company, he worked with all the machines and got a great education in the maintenance it takes to run heavy equipment.

He joined Peterson in April of 2007 as the Emission Solution Specialist. As the ESS, it is his job to stay up on the current California off-road diesel regulation. He has extensive customer contact in order to educate owners and operators and help them as they plan their compliance with the regulation. He also provides information to the customers on their equipment when they are in doubt about the horsepower, year, or tier level.
