High Climber Tree Rescue Seminar
Friday, February 22, 2008 – 10:30am – 12pm and 1pm – 2:30pm

The high climber tree rescue seminar will demonstrate how to get an injured climber down from a tree. The seminar will feature experienced climbers; Mark Standley Jr. and Carl Burge initiate the rescue and summon help utilizing the emergency evacuation procedure. During the rescue climbers will highlight the gear needed for rescue using both traditional climbing gear and new climbing equipment.

Mark and Carl will also show different knots and additional equipment need during the rescue process.

To start his career in the woods as a fifth generation logger, Mark Standley, Jr. spent his summer vacations during middle school down in Roseburg logging with his uncle. In 1995, he started tower logging at Mike Pihl Logging for the summer. After graduating from Amity High School in 1996, he continued on at Pihl for a year and a half before going to work at Cross & Crown Logging in 1997. He started setting chokers under a GT3 and over the next several years, worked his way up to hook tender on the Hawk yarder side.

In 2002, he started working for Bighorn Logging as hook tender on the TSY 6250 Yarder. He has tended hook on the TSY 6255 and TTY 70 yarders also. He continues at Bighorn Logging today in the position of logging operations manager overseeing day to day operations in the field. Mark is a certified medic-first aid instructor and works part time for Log Safe Inc. teaching first aid to various logging companies throughout the Northwest.

In June 2007, Mark worked with Associated Oregon Loggers to organize the videotaping of a tree rescue technique. The video will be used for safety training purposes throughout Oregon.

Mark began volunteering with the Amity Fire District in 2003 and was promoted to the position of Fire District Lieutenant in May 2007. Mark also enjoys hunting, fishing and camping with his wife and four children.


Carl Burge

Carl Burge began logging at 18 and started working at Bighorn Logging in 2004 as a chaser. He has since worked his way up to hook tender under the TSY 6255.

In June 2007, Carl helped Mark to organize the videotaping of a tree rescue technique. He participated in the tree rescue with other crew members from Bighorn Logging. The Associated Oregon Loggers video will be used for training purposes throughout the state.

Carl loves to fish and bow hunt. He has a new 25’ Super V Alumaweld boat and wants to operate his own fishing guide business in the Northwest. Carl grew up in Carlton, Oregon and still lives there with his wife and four children.
