The Washington Forest Practices seminars will be moderated by Gary Graves, Assistant Division Manager, Operations Forest Practices, Department of Natural Resources, Olympia, Washington.

The followings speakers will participate on the morning seminar discussing “Rules & How-to’s” Involving Eastside RMZ’s & Wetlands.

Todd Bates - Southeast Region, Ellensburg, Washington
Todd Bates earned his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Forestry from the University of California. Todd left the Potlatch Corporation in 1991 to work for the Idaho Department of Lands as a Resource Manager and Forest Practice Advisor. He also worked as an Instructor at Reedley Community College and Columbia Gorge Community College. Prior to becoming the Southeast region Family Forest Assistance Specialist, Todd worked for DNR as a Forest Practices Forester in White Salmon. He and his family currently reside in Ellensburg.

Bart Ausland, SE Region Forest Practice Coordinator, Ellensburg, WA
Bart Ausland attended high school in Chewelah, WA and graduated from the University of Washington, with a degree in Forest Management in March 1998. During his college summers, Bart worked as a seasonal firefighter for DNR in Colville. Upon graduation from the UW, Bart worked for the Idaho Panhandle National Forest, Avery, ID.; UW Stand Management Cooperative, Seattle; and Williamson Consulting, Colville. Bart was hired permanently by DNR in 2000 and has worked as a State Lands Forester, Loomis/NE Region; a Forest Practice Forester, Ellensburg/SE Region; and since 2006, has worked as the SE Region Forest Practice Coordinator, based in Ellensburg. Bart has been a member of the Society of American Foresters since 1997, and was the Central Washington Chapter-chair in 2005 and 2006. Bart’s interests include hunting, football, politics and organizing small scale not for profit….office football/basketball pools, fantasy football leagues, and Texas hold’em tournaments.

Gary Graves, Forest Practices Assistant Div. Mgr., Olympia, Washingtion
Gary Graves serves as Forest Practices Assistant Division Manager for Operations with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), with oversight responsibility for field implementation of Washington's Forest Practices Rules. Gary has spent 33 years with DNR, in numerous positions. He was hired as a Forest Technician in 1973 with duties in fire control, timber sale layout, PCT compliance, and forest practice inspections. In 1974, he was promoted to Forester 1 with primary duties of forest practice review and compliance, timber sale compliance, and fire control. In 1980, he was promoted to Local Unit Manager, with primary duties of supervising staff, planning and carrying out forest management activities on 50,000 acres of state land, as well as fire control and forest practices compliance. He became a Forest Practices forester in 1987 with primary responsibilities of reviewing Forest Practices Applications (FPAs) and compliance of approved FPAs. Prior to his current position, he served as Forest Practices District Manager in DNR's Central Region, supervising staff implementing the Forest Practices Rules in 4 counties. He also served for several years as an Operation Section Chief on one of Washington's Fire Management Teams.

The afternoon Washington Forest Practices session will begin at 1:30pm on Friday, February 22. The following speaker will address; “New Long Term Forest Practice Application Rules and Procedures”. This session will be moderated by Gary Graves.

Mary McDonald - SFLO Program Director
Mary McDonald is the Small Forest Landowner Office (SFLO) Manager for Washington Department of Natural Resources. The SFLO provides assistance to small forest landowners with the Forestry Riparian Easement Program, Family Forest Fish Passage Program, Forest Stewardship Program, Long Term Applications and Alternate Plans. Mary graduated from the University of Montana in Forest Resource Management. She has been working for WA State for 16 years with experience in forest practices, forest stewardship and timber sale layout and administration. Prior to working in the Northwest, Mary worked in the urban forestry in Chicago and Savannah, Georgia
